Now I'm going to go out on a limb here and say it's just barely possible that some people reading this comic are also playing Doom 3 (also known as John Carpenter's Ghosts of Mars: The Game.) If so, allow me to share a few tips I found on the net:

1. Download, install, and use the Duct Tape Mod: "Under the crazy presumption that a roll of duct tape has to exist somewhere on the Mars facility, the Duct Tape mod sticks flashlights to your machinegun and shotgun."
2. In game, pull down the console (control-alt-tilde) and enter these commands: r_gamma 1.3 and r_brightness 1.5. Save afterwards to preserve these settings.

This will change Doom 3 from a vaguely annoying stumbling-around-in-the-dark simulator to a game that's actually pretty fun, engaging, and atmospheric, even if it is seriously dependent on cheap scares. Still, though, the original DOOM will always have a pre-eminent place in my heart. But don't take my word for it -- obtain the original, then download the enhanced JDoom 3D engine and try it for yourself. For pure gleeful run-and-gun it can't be beat.
